In 1907, the Mary Johnston Hospital and Training School for Nurses were established by Dr. Rebecca Parish, a missionary physician of the Women's Foreign Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Its buildings were burned by the retreating Japanese Army toward the end of World War II. The new Mary Johnston Hospital was built, then dedicated and inaugurated in 1950 by no less than the President of the Philippines, Elpidio Quirino. The trend in Nursing Education then was towards a baccalaureate degree. Since the hospital could not grant a degree, the Department of Education of the Philippine government advised the School of Nursing to affiliate with an institution of higher learning, so Mary Johnston School of Nursing affiliated with Philippine Christian Colleges (PCC) (now Philippine Christian University, PCU). In 1953, the Mary Johnston School of Nursing had a contract with Philippine Christian Colleges to offer the general education subjects. The professional nursing subjects and the clinical practice were to be at Mary Johnston Hospital. The degree of Bachelor of Science in Nursing was conferred by Philippine Christian Colleges.

The Philippine Christian University is an institution established by the United Methodist Church (UMC) and the United Church of Christ in the Philippines (UCCP). While the nursing education program was carried out through PCC, all assets/properties of MJCN were turned over to the MJCN SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION, INC., which was established and organized solely for the support of MJCN in 1970. The Board of Trustees of MJSN made an action to turn over the educational program to PCC. The MJCN SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION, INC. was organized and took over the management of the properties/ assets of MJSN. The following are the programs of MJCNSFI:

SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship is given to a Methodist high-school graduate with high scholastic standing but needing financial assistance. The scholarship covers full tuition fees and dormitory fees. Selection of students is per episcopal area. A student continues to enjoy the scholarship if his/her grades are maintained according to what is prescribed by the Scholarship Committee.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

MCNSFI adopted a barangay in Tondo, Manila, aiming to develop it to be self-reliant. This program is called TAPS (Training and Assistance Program for Self-Reliance). Community health nurses handle the project. Some of the activities are: (a) feeding program for malnourished children, (b) wellness clinic, (c) livelihood programs, (d) health services, (c) socialization for elderly, mothers, youth and children, (f) Bible studies for the mothers. The Mary Johnston College of Nursing Alumni Association (MJCNAA), in partnership with MJCNSFI, offers scholarships to needy elementary and high-school students in the adopted barangay.

CELEDONIA M. AQUINO RESEARCH CENTER

This Center was established in honor of Celedonia M. Aquino who was the chairperson of the Board of Trustees for eighteen years (1980-1998). The purpose is to conduct research in the fields of nursing and other health-related issues. 

DORMITORY

PCU-MJCN requires all sophomore, junior, and senior nursing students to live in the dormitory. This includes social lounge and study areas, and dining services. This is where Christian values and spirituality are imbibed by the residents. The residents are provided health, guidance, and counseling services.

The faculty live in the dormitory. This facility is also open to paying transients: (1) alumni coming from abroad and from the provinces, (2) friends of the school who need to stay for a few days in Manila, and (3) employees of the Mary Johnston Hospital.

STAFF

The workers of the foundation are the matron, cooks, marketer, driver, maintenance man, janitor, gardener, dishwashers, and dormitory helpers. Most of them continue to serve until retirement because of the "cordial working atmosphere: prevailing in the institution." The foundation provides a retirement benefit for them.

SCHOLARSHIP FOR FACULTY

The faculty members are encouraged to do graduate work in the field of nursing. Funds are available for them to pursue master and/or doctoral studies.

PROVISION OF ADEQUATE FACILITIES FOR MJCN STUDENTS

One of MJCNSF goals is to provide and maintain facilities and equipment that conform to approved standards that will ensure the highest level of nursing education.
